The scripture tells us that our tongue is a very powerful tool that has the ability to produce good or evil.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
Our tongue has the capacity to bring life into a situation. With our tongue we praise God and worship Him, and we have the ability to express love and appreciation to others. We also use our words to pray for healing and deliverance of people. Our tongue has the power to stir up love, hope, faith, and kindness.
On the other hand, our words can have the power of death if used inappropriately. When we use our tongue in an ungodly way, we open the door to the enemy to have a foothold in our lives. People are in bondage to the evil words spoken by them or over them. One of the critical steps in deliverance ministry is to break off word curses and vows that people have spoken over themselves or others have spoken over them.
When teenagers first get behind the steering wheel, we teach and warn them about the potential pitfalls and dangers they may encounter. We provide thorough training because we understand the power of a moving vehicle and how dangerous it can be if not handled properly. Irresponsible and reckless driving can lead to all kinds of problems. Similarly, the scripture reminds us of the importance of recognizing the power of our words. Just as we respect the power of a car, we must also appreciate the power of our tongue and be mindful of God’s guidance on how to use it.
Many of us don’t consider our tongue as something that needs to be dedicated to the will of God. While we may dedicate our homes, cars, or finances to the Lord, we often feel free to use our words however we choose. We may use them to vent or express our feelings at any moment. Some believe that “being real” means saying whatever we want to reflect our personality or uniqueness. They worry that speaking only appropriate words will make them seem religious, robotic, or fake. The enemy deceives us with these lies, convincing us that it’s okay not to have a sanctified tongue. However, we can pray and ask the Lord to guide us in being authentic while still speaking words of life over ourselves and others.
