When our focus is people’s perception of us rather than our genuine relationship with the Lord, we are in danger of playing religion.
I. Desire to be Seen
And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. Matthew 6:5-8
The above passage is not about praying in front of people, but it is about desiring to be seen. The Pharisees were focused on what others thought of them, and that was more important than their desire to seek God through prayer.
Whenever we have a desire to be seen for our efforts, prayers, giving, and ministry we have downgraded our relationship with the Lord . We are more concerned about to what others think of our relationship with Him than the substance of the relationship. Our focus has changed from God pleasing to man pleasing!
Another issue with desiring to be seen is that it puts us on the path of performance to look mature and spiritual. We are no longer led by the Lord, neither do we desire to stay in step with the Holy Spirit. We are too busy trying to stay in step with those who look successful spiritually.
What are some areas in your life that need adjustment from being religious? How do you intend to keep your relationship with the Lord simple?
