In our culture, we have a dichotomy between being very opinionated and desiring to agree with others. Thanks to social media, this platform has opened the floodgates of man’s opinion where people can feel the freedom to espouse their opinions and find their like-minded followers. However, the Lord has much to say about coming into agreement with others that is important to all of us.
It appears that we only like people who are in agreement with our views and look down upon those who are not in agreement with us. This is a dangerous path especially in an opinion-charged culture where people’s views are so valuable to them, and if anyone who criticizes them, it is taken as a personal attack on their identity and personhood.
According to Webster’s Dictionary (to agree): To concur in (something, such as an opinion) : ADMIT, CONCEDE. b: to consent to as a course of action.
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-16
The Bible has insightful passages about agreement that is important to heed before we are pressured to jump on others’ bandwagon and come into agreement with others.
We generally quote the above passage when we are discussing people who want to marry an unbeliever. However, when we read the entire passage, it gives us insight that is relevant to all of us. In verse 16, the scripture reminds us that we are the temple of God! Therefore, the Lord tells us that we should not come into agreement with those who live in darkness or are idol worshippers.
That is a sobering truth that should make all of us examine our agreements and evaluate them based on the fact that we are temple of the Lord. Just because we like a commentator or someone on social media because they have smart remarks, it doesn’t mean that we need to follow them closely and come into agreement with them. Would the Lord approve of this person’s opinion/views or is it our carnality that has taken the lead in agreeing with them!?
In the current climate, people are motivated to come into agreement with anyone who has similar views regardless of where they stand spiritually and what is their ultimate motivation. Furthermore, when we come into agreement with someone, it may lead them or us down a course of action that we did not originally intend. We need to be careful whom we are following closely because they can have an impact on our attitude, views, and even actions.
